What’s Blooming in 2018

Floral trends on the horizon this year

Trends are a funny thing. Figuring them out is a combination of consumer behavior, the opinions of tastemakers and style mavens, and social media. What was popular one year can quickly become taboo the next, and then return to the top of the list down the road.

In any event, when looking at floral trends for 2018, there are a few key elements that appear over and over again – which is a good indication that these concepts will be first and foremost in consumers’ minds.

Floral trends and weddings

No other floral event is as well-researched and well-planned as a wedding. With magazine and online sources, as well as Pinterest and Instagram posts, brides- and grooms-to-be are always looking for floral trends to add color and style to the big day.

•  With more and more people planning destination and on-location weddings, flowers are playing a more central role. It’s a great way to decorate an outdoor area to provide the couple with a centerpiece for vows and photo ops. Floral arches and garlands are a way to add that personal touch to the location.

•  After the bride, the flower girl gets the most oohs and aahs. Traditionally, her role is to sprinkle a carpet of flower petals before the bride – but today’s generations are choosing to break from tradition by thinking outside of the petal basket. Alternatives for the flower girl include a replica of the bridal bouquet for small hands to manage, small purses embellished with flowers, floral crowns, and even small wreaths that can be held by a ribbon.

•  Flowers are a big deal at the reception. They are one of the first décor items to make an impression on guests. Today’s couples are choosing to keep tables simple, with small floral clusters on the table so guests do not have to constantly look around an arrangement to talk to someone sitting opposite them. The real floral drama, though, comes from above: hanging floral arrangements to create the sense of dining under a flower-filled pergola.

Floral trends and the home

A trend that never really vanishes is flowers in the home. What does change, though, is the role they play in the home and the flowers that rise in popularity.

•  As more and more consumers, Millennials in particular, choose to live in more urban areas, there is a growing need for green space. As a result, many people are looking for ways to incorporate greenery into their indoor world – and bouquets are an easy way to provide greenery and seasonal color.

•  When it comes to flower selection for this indoor greenery, everything old is new again. Younger generations, keen on a farm-to-table lifestyle and socially aware growers (such as HOSA International, a Rainforest Alliance Certified Flower Supplier), are choosing to fill their vases with the flowers their grandmothers grew: roses, peonies, chrysanthemums, gerberas, zinnias, dianthus, and sweet peas.
